SAN MATEO, Calif., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- EA SPORTS(TM), the Electronic Arts(R) (NASDAQ: ERTS) division responsible for creating "John Madden Football(TM)," said today it has scooped its competitors by creating 4 Way Play(TM), a controller adapter for the Sega(TM) Genesis(TM). The adapter will be the first of its kind to be released in the United States.

4 Way Play brings a whole new brand of sports action to video games by allowing multiple players to compete simultaneously. Players can go two on one, two on two, three against one, or four against the Genesis system.

4 Way Play was created in direct response to customer feedback. EA SPORTS conducted numerous focus groups and response to the adapter was overwhelming. 4 Way Play also lends itself to the new rage among "John Madden Football" fans -- tournament play. Scores of gamers across the country are setting up EA Sports-sponsored Madden tournaments for entertainment, fundraising and bragging rights in their neighborhood.

Bill Walsh, head coach for the Stanford Cardinal and recent NFL(R) Hall of Fame inductee, said, "4 Way Play is a great addition to sports gaming equipment and makes tournament play more exciting than ever. I'm pleased that my new EA SPORTS game, 'Bill Walsh College Football(TM),' will be the first to feature 4 Way Play."

Other games that will work with 4 Way Play to be released before the holidays include EA SPORTS titles "Madden NFL(R) '94," "NHL(R) '94" and "Soccer," plus the EA action title "General Chaos(TM)." All titles that will support 4 Way Play will be labeled on the game boxes.

4 Way Play will be available at select video game retailers starting in September at a suggested retail price of $29.95.
