From Sega Retro
The Sega Mega Drive first debuted in Japan in October 1988
Sega Mega Drive
The standard Sega Mega Drive model 1 console. Aside from different colour schemes, it is visually identical to its international counterparts. The cartridge slot is designed to take Japanese-style cartridges, however.
Following discussions with their American arm, Sega decided to bundle the console with their flagship product, Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sega Mega Drive 2
Unlike the west, the second model of the Sega Mega Drive in Japan opted for a title containing the number "2", rather than the roman numerals "II". This cost-reduced model is again identical to its international counterparts (bar the colour scheme), but features a power switch instead of a button.
