From Sega Retro
World Cup Soccer (ワールドカップサッカー), known as World Championship Soccer in the US, is a football game developed and published by Sega in 1989. It is one of Sega's most re-released Sega Mega Drive games, appearing in numerous compilations with varying names and briefly holding the Italian 1990 FIFA World Cup license. This means it was also known as World Cup Italia '90 for a short period. In Brazil, the game is known as Super Futebol II, and due to programming errors in earlier revisions, is also known simply just as Soccer or Sega Soccer.
World Championship Soccer is a football game, and so the same rules as football apply. However as there are no free kicks, World Championship Soccer is more violent than the real game. There are 24 countries to choose from and all the teams are based on those who plaed in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Originally released for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Master System, the game was brought to home computers including the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS computers and the ZX Spectrum by Elite.
The game was followed by World Championship Soccer II in 1994.
