Battle Monsters (バトルモンスターズ) is a versus fighting game released exclusively for the Sega Saturn in 1995. It was developed by Scarab and published in Naxat Soft in Japan and Acclaim in North America and Europe. The working title for the game was Van Battle.

Story

Every thousand years, the Monarch of Hell hosts a tournament for all the monsters and demons to decide the ruler of the netherworld for the next thousand years.

Character select

The game is a fighting game with a cast of monsters from hell, which are digitized from live actors, similar to the Mortal Kombat games. The game has platforming elements, as matches take place in small stages that often feature multiple platforms that the monsters can jump onto. Some stages contain objects that can be used to attack opponents. The screen zooms in and out to show more of the stage depending on the distance between the monsters. Matches are fought to the best of three rounds, with a round ending when a monster's life, depicted by a row of lit candles, is fully snuffed out. Rounds are timed (shown as an hourglass sifting sand, which turns red when time has nearly run out), and the monster with the most life remaining when time runs out is the winner.

Monsters move with Left and Right and crouch with Down. They backstep or run with Left Left or Right Right (or L or R). They jump with Up and double jump with Up Up. They punch with A and kick with B. Every monster has special moves that are performed with special button combinations. Monsters can jump onto a nearby platform with X, Y, or Z. Some attacks are designed to hit opponents on a higher or lower level, and monsters can jump off a platform with an attack by pressing C. Not all stages have platforms. Monsters can jump or walk forwards off a platform safely, but they fall on the ground and have to recover after walking backwards off a platform. Monsters can block attacks by holding the D-Pad away from the opponent (which can be done while standing or crouching).

Each monster has a mana gauge that fluctuates. Monsters can taunt their opponents by pressing C, which makes them momentarily vulnerable to attack but also reserves their mana up to the level of the gauge at that moment, allowing the player to build the gauge higher by carefully timing the taunts. When the gauge is full, it flashes, and every monster has a super special move that can be performed at maximum mana.

In the single-player game, the player picks a monster and fights against all twelve playable characters (including a mirror match against the chosen character). Then the player proceeds to fight the four bosses, known as "The Big 4," in a single battle consisting of one round against each boss. The game can be continued an unlimited number of times if the player loses a match. The game saves the player's top scores to the Saturn's internal memory. A second player can join the game for a fight by pressing  START  on a second control pad. There is also a dedicated two-player mode where the players choose any characters and fight on a randomly selected stage.

There are multiple difficulty levels (Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard), and players can toggle the timer and set the number of rounds needed to win a match (1, 2, or 3).

Monsters have a primary color scheme that is used when they are selected with C and a secondary color scheme that is used when they are selected with A. The color schemes are swapped around for player two.

Kap Ka can roll off the carpet with a cannonball attack (Rolling Bomb) with K. If he falls onto the ground instead of the opponent, he falls onto his back and is vulnerable while recovering (similar to falling off a platform).
Change Ring Left Right K Kap Ka hunches over for a moment. If the opponent hits him during this with a direct attack (not a projectile), the screen flashes white and the two combatants switch places, with the opponent taking damage.
Mana Up Hold P+K Kap Ka glows and slowly gains mana for as long as the buttons are held. He is vulnerable to attack while doing this.
Heel Stomp  TAUNT  when on a platform above the opponent Kap Ka falls off the platform with a diving kick.
Nightmare Up-left  TAUNT  at maximum mana Kap Ka waves his wand, summoning a swarm of miniature Kap Kas on magic carpets to sweep across the screen at various altitudes.

Headlong Pierce Left Right P Shion charges forward while stabbing with his katana, which knocks his opponent over.
Side Flying Leg Up-left K Shion backflips through the air while kicking.
Butting Head Left Right P (close) Shion headbutts his opponent three times.
Demonic Kick  TAUNT  when on a platform above the opponent Shion jumps off the platform with a flying kick.
Lightning Slash Right  TAUNT  at maximum mana Shion stabs with his katana, then slashes it downward.

Bosses

There are four boss characters, called "The Big 4," representing the elements. They are not playable.

Leviathan
A water demon that can shoot water blasts, sink into a puddle, and stretch his body.

Salamande
A fire demon that can shoot fire bolts.

Jinnee
A wind demon that is mostly invisible; his outline can still be seen, and he appears briefly when he is hit. He moves swiftly and can throw his opponents telekinetically from any distance.

Behemoth
An earth demon and the final boss. He can throw boulders and create stalagmites.

Stages

Every monster has his or her own stage where battles take place in the single-player mode. All of the bosses share the same stage, the Palace of Spirit. The stage is chosen randomly in the two-player mode.

Floodgate
Stage of Makaryudo. It has three levels, and the ground on the top two levels breaks away at certain points to allow monsters to fall to a lower level.

On the Palm
Stage of Drethdok. It consists of two giant outstretched palms. Monsters can fall from one onto the other; falling off the second palm into the bottomless pit drops the monster back down from the top of the screen.

Stage of Chili and Pepper. It is an open field with no platforms.

Hungry Cave
Stage of Headless Harn. It consists of a large platform in the middle, and monsters that fall off (or are knocked off) either side of it are consumed by man-eating plants, resulting in an instant K.O.

Stage of La Pa. There are mezzanines on each side, with statues that can be knocked down onto opponents.

Ice Valley
Stage of Fangore. There are three small platforms, and the rightmost ice platform is destructible.

Underground
Stage of Naga. Each side of the stage has a low platform and a high platform. The high platforms contain large boulders that can be pushed onto the opponent. The top of the cave has stalactites that can be knocked down.

Stage of Kap Ka. There are two medium platforms suspended by ropes that move from side to side and up and down.

Stage of Skythe. The moving clouds in the background can act as platforms.

Scarab developed a sequel, Killing Zone, which was released for the PlayStation in 1996.
