Sega OutRun Hardware is an arcade system created by Sega in 1986, and was first used for the driving game OutRun. The specifications of the system are similar to those of the System 16, with the addition of a second 68000 processor and a separate video board which allowed for an extra graphics layer for the road. Only four games made use of the hardware, all of which are driving games and have cabinets designed to resemble a car or motorcycle.

Specifications

  • Main CPU: 2 x MC68000 @ 12.5 MHz
  • Sound CPU: Z80 @ 4 MHz
  • Sound chip: YM2151 @ 4 MHz & SegaPCM @ 15.625 kHz
  • Video resolution: 320 x 224
  • Board composition: CPU board + video board
  • Hardware features: 128 sprites on screen at one time, 2 tile layers, 1 text layer, 1 sprite layer with hardware sprite zooming, 1 road layer, can draw 2 roads at once, translucent shadows
