Star Control is a 1990 space combat simulation game developed by Toys for Bob and published for a variety of video game systems by Accolade, including to the Sega Mega Drive in 1991 (under the Ballistic brand). It was released without a license from Sega, prior to the Sega v. Accolade lawsuit.

Gameplay

The Mega Drive version of Star Control adds a further six scenarios not seen in the original Amiga version.

History

Development

The Mega Drive Star Control was ported from its Amiga incarnation. The original game was written in C, and porting to the Mega Drive took roughly four months[1].

As a 12-megabit (1.5MB) cartridge, Star Control was the largest Mega Drive game at the time of release[1], a selling point so prized by Accolade, that the publisher rushed the port out of the door before optimisations to the gameplay could be made.

Legacy

While its sequel Star Control II skipped Sega systems, plans were drawn up at one stage to bring Star Control III to the Sega Saturn.
