Classic Mac OS, formerly known as Mac OS and simply Macintosh, is a personal computer operating system developed by American technology company Apple Computer. The primary rival to the IBM PC architecture, it was released in January 1984. Although Classic Mac OS generally received far fewer games than its IBM counterpart, a number of first and third-party Sega games have been published to Apple's original operating system.

In March 2001, the operating system was succeeded by its modern replacement, Mac OS X.
