Logo-pdf.svg 1993-01-08 Beep! MegaDrive (JP), "February 1993" as CD Sonic the Hedgehog. The game is reported as 20% complete and scheduled for release in March. It says the game was first revealed at Yuusei Sega World, where it got a great reaction. Many frames of the opening animation are shown, and it says the theme song features "the rhythmic music of Mi-Ke" (NOTE: Keiko Utoku was a member of this group). The editorial department spread the idea something like a time warp is in the game, which is verified here with some screenshots.
Logo-pdf.svg 1993-01-xx Dengeki Mega Drive (JP), "February 1993" as CD Sonic the Hedgehog, and is given an unknown release date. It says the hype around Sonic 2 hasn't subsided yet, but this iteration will make perfect use of the Mega-CD hardware's functions. Every screenshot on the first page is taken from the opening animation, and it mentions that the theme song will be sung by the group Mi-Ke, who sang a vocal version of Sega music the previous year.

The second page highlights the new Time Attack Mode, which down to 1/100th of a second. Item Boxes are pointed out, but what items they contain cannot yet be confirmed. Finally, it shows off a bit of the ability to warp to the future or the past and notes this could make for an interesting story. Who the game's antagonist is is also unknown at this point.

Logo-pdf.svg 1993-01-xx Mega Drive Fan (JP), "February 1993" The game is listed as releasing in March. Few details are known, and the writer wonder if Tails or Dr. Eggman will appear. It says that the new time travel feature was planned for 2 before being repurposed here. The opening animation and theme song are also noted to exist, but Mi-Ke is called "MIKE".

The game description reads "Dr. Eggman and Sonic confront each other again, now for the Time Stone that sleeps on the miracle star Little Planet. Also has a Time Attack mode."

While scores are positive, the reviews are generally made up of problems to be had with the game, particularly with its difficulty and differences from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Game beginner girl 青山ようこ says it is full of unique ideas only made possible by the Mega-CD, with an opening animation, sound that changes with each time period and its distinct Special Stage visuals, but already started losing track of where she was after the 1st stage. Foreign game user OLIX光治 says the gimmicks are more complicated than Sonic 2 which makes them more rewarding to master, but the game has too many things crammed into it and the Special Stages aren't as fun as they look. Game mania group ハイローラーズ's ロ say the large maps and different time periods make it very easy to get lost, so it's difficult to enjoy despite the backup memory and time attack additions. General game user ジャムおじさん says that the fundamental sense of speed that was in Sonic 2 is missing and this game's different development staff were less ambitious. He couldn't get invested in new characters Amy or Metal Sonic, but thinks the music is good, saying at the end it's worth getting if you think of it more as a music CD.

BE-Mega's editorial department says at the end they were surprised Sonic CD didn't do very well, with opinions very divided.
