Ecco the Dolphin

From Sega Retro

Mostly unknown JP cover variant

So this may or may not be common knowledge, but when Ecco was first released in Japan, the first run of boxes featured some flavor text saying Ecco is a dolphin with 7 stars on his head (instead of 5.) This mistake was caught early and the boxes were reprinted for a second run.

We have the original 7-star misprint. Does anyone have a scan of the reprint? Source and additional information here CartridgeCulture (talk) 00:29, 9 December 2021 (EST)

Ecco the Dolphin CD

Something pretty important we've overlooked.

In the US/EU, Ecco and Ecco II were released for the Mega CD. They were called "Ecco the Dolphin" and "Ecco: The Tides of Time" respectively. But we knew that

The Japanese, however, got Ecco the Dolphin CD. Ecco CD is a compilation of the US/EU Ecco and Ecco II ports (though I'm guessing they were translated). It's why this says "disc 2". There was no stand-alone release of either Ecco game for the Mega CD in Japan, just the compilation.

So, do I make a new page for Ecco the Dolphin CD? As it's effectively two games in one box there's no title screen to extract and not much to say. -Black Squirrel 08:17, 9 July 2011 (CDT)

I would make a new page in this case, as is the case for the other 2-in-1 things. - Andlabs 11:45, 9 July 2011 (CDT)

Ecco the Dolphin / Ecco the Tides of Time Limited Editions...

I don't know in which "shores", these two have arrived http://www.racketboy.com/journal/sega-genesis-megadrive-ecco-the-dolphin-box-set-photos-info ... but I can assure you these two were sold in my local "agente autorizado Sega/ Sega authorized retailer" (the only one we had) ... i remember it as if it was today... I spended many hours,"glueded" to the shop windows gazing at them... we don't forget a thing like this... and i live in the middle of nowhere... in a small town where nothing happens, where we need to kill flys just to have a criminal rate :) ... I'm not lying... word of Asagoth... I'm just leaving this note here...--Asagoth (talk) 06:08, 31 January 2018 (CST)

Japanese version

In Japan there is an extra level (the stomach) which is only playable if you die during the Vortex Queen fight. As we've just added some screenshots I have one for it - however as its not in the original release should we add it to the level list? (talk) 09:49, 29 November 2021 (GMT)

Yes :) Go ahead and add it, and add (Japanese version only) to the end of the level title too. Thanks for catching that our article didn't include it in the first place, it should definitely be on there. CartridgeCulture (talk) 05:17, 29 November 2021 (EST)

DPA (Dynamic Play Adjustment)

Kind of interesting. Apparently Ecco was marketed with something called DPA (dynamic play adjustment), where the game makes minor adjustments based on how well/poorly you're doing. Gives me "Diamond Dimension System" vibes. Source here. CartridgeCulture (talk) 02:54, 3 November 2022 (EDT)

I noted something similar for Ecco: The Tides of Time. Some levels are only played in "hard" mode, and unless you explicitly choose "easy" or "hard" at the beginning of the game, the game decides whether to put you through the hard levels based on your performance (how long it takes you to complete the levels and maybe some other factors). This is the first I've heard of anything similar being in the first game (but it takes me an hour to do anything in these games, so I wouldn't notice anything that rewards playing well anyway). --Typhoon (talk) 05:30, 3 November 2022 (EDT)
