Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, known as Golden Axe: Death Adder no Gyakushuu (ゴールデンアックス デスアダーの逆襲) in Japan, is an entry in the Golden Axe series, and the second arcade release. It was developed by Sega AM1 for Sega System 32 arcade hardware and released in 1992.

Like the original Golden Axe, the game is a 2D beat-'em-up, though as it is running on System 32 hardware, it is able to provide the user with superior graphics and sound than all previous entries in the series. It also offers four completely new playable characters.

The game has never been ported to a home platform. It was officially released for the first time outside arcades on the Astro City Mini.

Levels

The game consists of 5 levels, with levels 2 and 4 each offering 2 levels to play through. In-between levels, the map screen shows each location with a name, or rather a notable landmark, written in Greek: Waterfall (Χείμαρρος), Cave (σπήλαιον), Mushrooms (μυκης), Town (πόλης), Grave (νεχριει), Sea (Θάλασσα) and finally ??? (hard to read).

Scene 5: Defeat The Death-Adder!
Now, we do battle in the castle...

The dragon takes the warriors from area to area of the Death-Adder-shaped castle. Clearing each area destroys a piece of the castle. In order, these areas are the left arm, chest, left shoulder and right shoulder, each with a miniboss at the end fought in previous scenes. The final boss fight is Death-Adder, who is fought in two phases.

History

Legacy

While not as frequently referenced as the original Golden Axe soundtrack, the music of The Revenge of Death Adder has occasionally resurfaced, first in 2008 when a remix of "A Hope for Tomorrow" was created for Golden Axe The Music by original composer Tomoyuki Kawamura, while the game's theme for series antagonist Death Adder was used in Golden Axe: Beast Rider later the same year. Several songs from the game have been available as background tracks in the MJ series since Sega Network Taisen Mahjong MJ5R Evolution [3].
