Road Blaster FX (ロードブラスターFX), known in the United States as Road Avenger, is a full-motion video driving game developed by Wolf Team for the Sega Mega-CD. It was first published in Japan by Wolf Team in December 1992. The game is a port of the titular 1985 Data East arcade game Road Blaster, an interactive movie produced by Japanese animation studio Toei Animation.

Wolf Team later developed and published a 1995 Sega Mega LD port titled Road Blaster, known in the United States as Road Prosecutor.

Story

In the late 1990s United States, the player assumes the role of a vigilante who drives a customized sports car in order to get revenge on a biker gang responsible for his wife's death on their honeymoon. After recovering from his own injuries, he upgrades his car and goes on a rampage through nine areas. His goal is to seek out the gang's female boss and complete his vengeance.

Gameplay

The game sees players drive through nine stages of vehicular combat, presented in full-motion video. When presented with certain situations, players are prompted to turn left with Left, turn right with Right, accelerate with A or C, or brake with B. Failing to do so results in crashing the car and having to begin that segment of gameplay again. The player has a limited number of lives, and the game ends if the player runs out of lives.

There are two selectable difficulty levels (Normal and Hard). On both difficulty levels, tones sound to indicate the correct action. When playing on Normal, arrows and "Turbo" or "Brake" notices additionally appear on screen.

History

The original arcade game runs on LaserDisc-based hardware and is a full-motion video based game consisting of quick-time events. At the time, no home systems could run Road Blaster without external hardware; while X1 and MSX ports arrived in Japan in 1986, they required an external VHD player to function. Soon, the newly-invented compact disc began to integrate itself further into home electronics, and with the advent of CD-based video game systems like the Sega Mega-CD, Road Blaster was able to be brought to the mass market.

Road Blaster's arcade release employs an analog stick which measures turning speed. In the home versions, this feature is removed due to the digital nature of D-pads.

Legacy

The game was bundled with Cobra Command in the Sega Saturn game Thunder Storm & Road Blaster. It was later ported to iOS by G-Mode, the company that bought Data East's intellectual property after its bankruptcy.

Versions

Mega-CD version

The Sega Mega-CD version features an exclusive introductory theme song composed and performed by Japanese band J-Walk. Originally recorded in Japanese, the band later performed the entire song in English for the game's Western release.

Mega LD version

The Sega Mega LD version features the original arcade soundtrack encoded in Roland Corporation's RSS spatial audio technology.
