Creating references for media we wouldn't host?

So, I'm struggling a little bit with whether it makes sense to make a Template:Citation equivalent here for publications that wouldn't make sense for us to actually host. As an example, I was digging around to try to figure out if all the Summer CES events in Chicago were held at McCormick Place. This often isn't specified in gaming-specific writeups, but by reading a book on business meetings (https://www.google.com/books/edition/Successful_Meetings/wRMtAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=consumer+electronics+show+chicago&dq=consumer+electronics+show+chicago&printsec=frontcover) let me at least confirm that was the case in 1994. We could cite the Google Books URL, but I feel like that puts us at the mercy of Google Books continuing to be a thing. - Scarred Sun (talk) 16:59, 24 December 2020 (EST)

I guess the end goal would be to have a proper scan of every (relevant) CES guidebook - supposedly video games were a third or half of the exhibits by 1994, so that would be well within scope
Google Books is a risk but it's a better start than nothing. I reckon you'd probably find an address in one of the Japanese gaming mags - they seem to be better with detail than in the West -Black Squirrel (talk) 17:13, 24 December 2020 (EST)

Repeated text bug

There's some strange bug with the template. On technical specification articles (for example, Sega Saturn/Technical specifications), every note that uses the Ref template, for whatever reasons, repeats the same text twice. It makes the notes almost unreadable. What is causing this bug, and is there a way to fix it? Turbo (talk) 18:20, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

It looks like you're trying to use the template for footnotes, which isn't what it was designed for. I've made a couple of new templates for you: template:fn and template:footnotes (for the bottom of the page). Let me know if there are any problems. - Hivebrain (talk) 19:21, 12 June 2021 (EDT)

This task is unfinished
This is a wiki task that requires more thought or peer review. An important issue that needs to be solved, which will appear at the top of Sega Retro:Todo until this message is removed.

There's duplicate support for quotes in intref/fileref/magref/videoref. I think ideally they ought to share the same underlying reference formatting template. Not quite sure how best to achieve this yet, and when you play with high traffic templates, the server slows down considerably for a bit.

We may also want to align ourselves more with wikipedia in this area so we're not reinventing the wheel. Depends on how much information we want to display - some of it can be automated. -Black Squirrel (talk) 08:57, 25 July 2021 (EDT)
