Darwin Pond is a Windows PC artificial life simulation program developed by Jeffrey Ventrella, Brian Dodd, and Rocket Science Games. Originally scheduled to be published in late 1997[1], legal issues with its planned publisher SegaSoft saw its release as a commercial product cancelled, with Darwin Pond being released as freeware shortly after.[2]

History

When Rocket Science Games was forced to close down in April 1997[1], a barebones staff was retained in some capacity to finish the publishing of both Darwin Pond and The Space Bar. Although it was hoped that the success of these games would convince SegaSoft to take a second chance on the developer, this did not come to pass.[1]

Development

Darwin Pond was created at Rocket Science Games, Inc., in 1996, initially as an artificial life research project. It was later developed into a product in '97. After difficult legal battles between the producers and the publishers, while Rocket Science was nearing its end as a company, Darwin Pond was set free from the binds of legal and corporate snags, although it never became a commercial product. In the aftermath, I chose to offer it over the internet as free software.
