Fade to Black is the sequel to Flashback, a 3D action game released for PC MS-DOS computers in 1995 and then converted to the PlayStation in 1996. It was originally announced as Crossfire.

It was also intended to be released for the Sega Saturn[2][3]. Delphine Software International contracted Virtual Studio in 1996 to do the conversion, as it was one of the few studios with some Saturn development experience in France. However, after several months of waiting for the confirmation and assets, Delphine had a change of plans in their commercial initiative to publish their games on more platforms and decided that Virtual Studio would port Time Commando instead, another 3D action game from its subsidiary company Adeline Software International[4]. Since no workaround plan was apparently devised to cover up the shift of development, it is to be assumed that the Sega Saturn conversion of Fade to Black simply ended up being cancelled altogether.

An aftermarket Dreamcast port was released by French indie publisher JoshProd in 2018.
