The game is a typical racing game with a predefined course set and vehicle mechanics (you can only configure the controls and HUD display before each race). Races are always presented from behind the wheel. accelerates, brakes, and and change gears.
While the structure of Newman-Haas is the same across both the Mega Drive and Super NES versions, the Super Nintendo version is much faster, building on the engine seen in World Championship Racing. This however, comes at a cost, with less detail on each track and a shorter draw distance. The Mega Drive version, conversely, attempts to render 3D objects such as buildings and tunnels, bringing more variety to the stages at the expense of frame rate, which is more than halved.
