Virtua Fighter (バーチャファイター) is a 1993 fighting game developed for the Sega Model 1 arcade platform by AM2, a development group within Sega, headed by Yu Suzuki. It was the first game in the Virtua Fighter series, and the first 3D-based fighting game (another 3D fighting game called 4D Sports Boxing was released few years earlier but is strictly boxing). It has been ported to several home video game consoles including the Sega Saturn (one of five Japanese launch titles) and Sega 32X (the last officially licensed 32X title in Japan). A port was also released for Microsoft Windows.

The game takes place in a 3 dimensional arena. The technology used for the game relied on quadratic surfaces rather than the polygons used for modern 3D graphics. The images were created using wireframes and flat-shaded quads.

Unlike other fighting games of the time (such as Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat), the game relied on a control stick and only three buttons, Punch, Kick, and Guard. Simple button combinations would trigger even more moves. Using a series of button presses would trigger more complicated combos. This made what seemed like a relatively simple control scheme incredibly in-depth. The moves performed were also incredibly realistic where-as most fighting games at the time used greatly exaggerated and unrealistic moves.

Port Comparisons

The 32x Version of Virtua Fighter has a decreased polygon count and generally more simplified graphics. The music is based off the arcade version, and is rendered through the Genesis and 32x sound hardware.

The Saturn version has more detailed graphics and more polygons than the 32X version, but due to the CD read-speed of the Saturn, has around 5-second load times, as opposed to the 32x version's instantaneous loading. The Saturn version has remixed arrange music based off the arcade version's.

Both versions have a Round-Robin tournament mode which is an addition from the arcade release. They are both otherwise very similar to the arcade version.
