Sega Studios USA (セガスタジオUSA)[1] or Sega Studio USA R&D Dept.[2], was one of 7 departments in the Global Entertainment R&D Div. of Sega Corporation[3]. It was a continuation of Sonic Team USA, being renamed in 2004. Lead by Takashi Iizuka, it was effectively a US branch of Sonic Team designed to help Sonic games appeal to Western audiences.
The biggest change with Sega Studios USA is that by this point, Yuji Naka was being moved to a higher role at Sega, overseeing all consumer game development. As such, Iizuka played a larger role, spearheadding development on Shadow the Hedgehog and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams.
Sega Studios USA ceased to exist in mid-2008, with the team moving back to Japan.
