PAGENAME (ファンタシースターオンライン) is an Online Action RPG developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Dreamcast. It was the first Phantasy Star game released in six years, following Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, and makes extensive use of the Dreamcast's online features.

Phantasy Star Online is an MMORPG made by Sega for the Dreamcast. This one has a lot of references to past Phantasy Star games. PSO was also released for GameCube, Xbox and two PC ports(The first was a direct port of the Dreamcast version for Asia and the second was a port of the Xbox version named "Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst and Episode IV in Japan") (and was one of the only online games for GameCube). The GameCube release contained a downloadable Tiny Chao Garden minigame for use with the Game Boy Advance. A sequel, C.A.R.D. Revolution Episode 3, was made for GameCube, but not for Xbox. The PC version(Blue Burst) introduced a new episode named Episode IV, which played similar to Episode 1 & 2.
+
The game was re-released and improved on extensively. This article covers the original Dreamcast release.

The game itself is your typical RPG, where you slay monsters on the field, find items, upgrade your equipment, and of course, level up. Episodes I and II differ from many previous games of this genre by offering a real-time, rather than turn-based approach to combat - and seamlessly integrating this with the exploration/plot development aspects of the game. Episode III reverted back to a turn-based combat system, opting to also turn from a typical RPG to a card game, similar to Yu-gi-oh or Magic: The Gathering. Episode IV and Phantasy Star Universe reverted to Episode I and II's gameplay style.

Story
 +
Unlike the rest of the Phantasy Star series, PSO's prologue starts on the planet of Coral (possibly a splinter colony from the Algol star system). Coral was becoming unsuitable for life, so a pair of colony ships, Pioneer 1 and Pioneer 2, were sent to the planet Ragol, thought to be uninhabited by intelligent life, to colonize it. Pioneer 1 reached Ragol safely, and constructed a colony there. But when Pioneer 2 arrived seven years later, a sudden explosion engulfed the Pioneer 1 colony as they attempted to communicate. The Player (s) take the role of Hunters, mercenaries/bounty hunters/troubleshooters sent down to the source to determine the cause of the explosion, and find any survivors.

Episodes I, II and IV differ from many previous games of this genre by offering a real-time, rather than turn-based approach to combat - and seamlessly integrating this with the exploration/plot development aspects of the game. The game still retains a cult following and can still be played through private servers with the Broadband Adapter and Dreamcast Modem.

Episode III takes place twenty-one years after Episodes I and II.  Pioneer 2 is still orbiting Ragol, its people still not yet allowed to come down to their new home.  A group of Hunters and other citizens have become dissatisfied with the actions of the Principal Government, which they have come to see as corrupt.  They have fled down to the planet's surface, and formed the Arkz, an Eco-terrorist-like group that seeks to expose the government's corruption, and keep them from overdeveloping the planet for their own gain.

History
 +
Release
 +
To promote the game, Sega "bought" a star and named it "Ragol"odmuk.

Blue Burst's story, Episode IV, takes place not long after Episode II. A meteor crash landed into the deserts of Ragol and it's up to hunters to investigate. Rupika (who was seen breifly in the Gran Squall mission in Episode I) and a man named Leo Gahart seem to be connected to this incident. Episode IV is noted for also being significantly more difficult than Episode I and II, and also not as prone to hacking as the console ancestors of the game, due to everything being saved server side.

Sequels and re-releases
 +
For the Dreamcast update, see Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2. There are four episodes in the series, however only the first exists in the Dreamcast game. This first episode was re-released for the GameCube and Xbox as Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II in 2002 with an additional secondary Episode added in and with new features such as local multiplayer. The third can be seen in Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution for the Nintendo GameCube and the fourth, Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst was released for Microsoft Windows.

Sonic Cameo
SEGA Cameo
Lots of times, on the online servers, there would be cameos with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman. The game also contains a few cameo items, such as Opa Opa from Fantasy Zone, Maracas from Samba de Amigo, even a gun created by Dr. Eggman, aptly called the Egg Blaster.

Version Differences
+
Versions
Version 2:

Version 2 for Dreamcast and PC added in the 'Ultimate' difficulty, increased the level cap to 200 and added in several bug fixes and a "Hunter's License" subscription fee in North America and Japan, however the European version was still free to play,

Episode 1 & 2:

Episode 1 and 2 for Gamecube and Xbox added in several changes: The inclusion of three new character classes, items and equipment were rebalanced, the experience required to level was decreased and the drop rate for rare items was increased.

Along with these changes was the inclusion of splitscreen multiplayer for up to 4 players, and the inclusion of the new Episode 2 storyline taking place in new areas.

Episode 1 & 2 Plus:

After the discovery of an exploit that was able to make the Gamecube run retail games and homebrew by changing the DNS of the game to make it connect to a local server instead of the official servers a program such as PSOLoad or PSUL streams data to the Gamecube. Other fixes included removing several item duplicating exploits and the inclusion of the online only quests to offline gameplay. THis version was only released for the Gamecube in Japan and North America.

Episode IV/Blue Burst:

Episode IV/Blue Burst for Windows is only playable by connecting to an online server, although it still includes the offline story mode. The main inclusion is the brand new Episode IV mode added which includes 4 new areas, but reuses most of the enemies, bosses and items from Episode 1 & 2. Another feature is the inclusion of teams, similar to Clans or Guilds in MMORPG who work together to help achieve certain goals, such as cheaper discount on items and free character customization.

Phantasy Star Online (ファンタシースターオンライン) is an Online Action RPG developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Dreamcast. It was the first Phantasy Star game released in six years, following Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, and makes extensive use of the Dreamcast's online features.

The game was re-released and improved on extensively. This article covers the original Dreamcast release.

    Story

    Gameplay

The game itself is a typical RPG, where you slay monsters on the field, find items, upgrade your equipment, and of course, level up.

    History

    Release

To promote the game, Sega "bought" a star and named it "Ragol"[15].

    Sequels and re-releases

For the Dreamcast update, see Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2. There are four episodes in the series, however only the first exists in the Dreamcast game. This first episode was re-released for the GameCube and Xbox as Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II in 2002 with an additional secondary Episode added in and with new features such as local multiplayer. The third can be seen in Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution for the Nintendo GameCube and the fourth, Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst was released for Microsoft Windows.
