Asterix and the Great Rescue is a platforming game developed by Sega and released in 1993 for the Sega Mega Drive and 1994 for the Sega Master System (Europe only) and Sega Game Gear, exclusively in the US and Europe. It was the first game Sega to tie into the Asterix series of comic books and other media.

Gaul is almost completely occupied by the Roman Empire; the only plot of land remaining is the small town where Asterix and his friend Obelix live. While the town has been able to stalemate the Romans in the surrounding areas until then, the Romans did capture and imprison the town druid, Getafix, and their pet Dogmatix in Rome, and the two main characters must now set off to Rome to free them.

Mega Drive Gameplay

Master System title screen.

You can play as either Asterix or Obelix by selecting one before each level from a map screen. Both characters may jump with A, punch with B, and crawl by holding Down and a direction at the same time. Should a character collect a bag scattered about the levels, they receive a limited number of balls they can throw at enemies with C. There are at least two types of balls; one is shot to destroy enemies, the other to create platforms you can stand on; choose with Up+C.

Master System/Game Gear Gameplay

This version is a more traditional play-all-the-levels-in-order platformer. You start out as Asterix, but can switch between Asterix and Obelix by pressing Up+1. Asterix may move while crouching by holding Down and a direction. 1 jumps, 2 punches. Should a weapon bag be found, 1 shoots the weapon, and only the character who found the weapon can use it.
