It is a successor to the Sega System 1, though largely an upgrade, utilising the same Zilog Z80 CPU, sound chips, and Sega graphics chipset. The major upgrades of the System 2 are the addition of a ROM board, faster RAM, and a larger 512×512 background scrolling plane.
