Perhaps they had a second variation of 3D Goggle on its way, and when the LaserActive failed, they converted the rear to normal inputs and sold it by itself? Maybe the size/shape is a coincidence but they were even released around the same time...

It appears the confusion stemmed from the relevant page at the esteemed [http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/nec/nec_pce-ld1/nec_pce-ld1.htm LaserDisc Archive], where the author mistyped "PCE" as "PDE". Some parts of the page were later corrected, but other parts still display "PDE". This information appears to have been copied wholesale around the internet, with many (including myself at one point) making the mistake. Hope this helps :)
