Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition, known as Street Fighter II Dash Plus (ストリートファイターII ダッシュプラス) in Japan is a fighting game released by Capcom for the Sega Mega Drive in 1993. It is an enhanced port of the arcade game, Street Fighter II': The World Warrior released in 1992, with elements from its two arcade upgrades, Street Fighter II': Champion Edition (Street Fighter II Dash in Japan) and Street Fighter II (Turbo): Hyper Fighting.
Contrary to popular belief and exacerbated by the confusing naming schemes, Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition is not a direct port of Street Fighter II': Champion Edition. Special Champion Edition is a Mega Drive-exclusive game, closer in nature to Hyper Fighting, featuring all twelve Street Fighter II fighters as playable characters from the start as well as hyper modes. Alterations are also made to take into account the weaker Mega Drive hardware and the cartridge technology on offer - there is no announcer, for example, and there are predictably fewer on-screen colours.
Special Champion Edition is notable among Mega Drive fans, as the console's main competitor, the Super Nintendo, had at this point received one or two Street Fighter II games, all derived from arcade versions of the game. As well as bringing Sega's console back onto a level playing field, Special Champion Edition also debuted with the Mega Drive six button control pad, utilised by this game and considered by many to be the superior control scheme to the default SNES controllers.
Both consoles would see the next upgrade, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers. Special Champion Edition has since been re-released as part of the Wii's Virtual Console service.
