Richard Stewart was born in El Paso, Texas on January 5, 1925 to Richard Davant Stewart Jr.[9][10] (son of Richard Davant Stewart[11][12] and Anne Caroline Hardy) and Mary Vermillion Stewart[13][14][15] (née Johnson[16], daughter of Dr. Henry Franklin Vermillion[17][18][19][20][21][22][23] and Ida Kate Vermillion[24][25] of Eastland, Texas) and his brothers were William Robert Stewart and Henry Vermillion Stewart, both of San Francisco, California and James Franklin Stewart[1][2][26], a rancher from Kelowna[27], British Columbia, Canada, who ran the Casorso, Bulman and Chilco ranches under the business name of Kelowna Ranch, Inc.[28] (incorporated on April 27, 1960[29] as Kelowna Ranches, Ltd.[30][31]), all descendants, through their father, of the Davant family, a Huguenot family who emigrated from England to Georgia in the 1700s.
