Space Hard (スペースハード) is a first person shooting arcade game developed by Sega for the Cyber Dome theatre enclosure attraction. Released alongside it in late 1990, it would become the only game developed for the system, likely never seeing a release outside of Japan or in another form.

Gameplay

Space Hard is a first person shooter specifically designed for Sega's large Cyber Dome theatre. In it, one to eight players partake in a competitive three minute long score attack game, traversing through a number of on rails outer space environments and using their gun yokes to dispose of various enemy types. At the end of each fixed game, the player with the highest score's lighting system flashes to indicate their victory.

History

Release

Space Hard was first seen under the name of Star Liner[2] when showcased publicly for the first time in the Cyber Dome enclosure at the Amusement Machine Show 1990.[3] The following month, it had received a name change and been installed more permanently at the Carnival game center in Tokyo Dome City's Korakuen Amusement Park, then known as "Big Egg City".

Following its late 1990 debuts, Sega are thought to have shipped an unspecified amount of other Cyber Dome theatres with Space Hard out to other large amusement facilities,[3] including in a cut-down six player version. The small number of other enclosures manufactured most likely all ran the same game as each other, however none appear to have ever left Japan's shores.

Archival status

No ROM sets have been dumped for Space Hard, nor are there believed to be any remaining Cyber Dome theatres in existence, rendering it currently unplayable, however music from the game composed by Keisuke Tsukahara did later appear in the Formula -G.S.M. SEGA 5- compilation album.[4]
