Further footage of a pre-rendred ''Ecco the Dolphin'' was used to promote an early [[Sega Saturn]], although it has not been confirmed whether development moved to that system. ''Ecco'' was reportedly bogged down with delays and the project was cancelled due to poor 32X sales (likely early 1995).

Ecco the Dolphin is an undeveloped Sega 32X entry in the Ecco the Dolphin franchise.[1] While the game failed to make it past the concept and planning phases, a tech demo was created showing off a Cinepak-encoded video of Ecco jumping through the game's logo, and was used to demonstrate the 32X at trade shows like Summer CES 1994.[2] It may have been directly related to Ecco Jr.,[3] with audio production of a 32X version of Ecco Jr. dated as late as May 1994 by Andy Armer,[4] a month prior to Summer CES.

History

This version of Ecco the Dolphin was announced shortly after the unveiling of the 32X Summer 1994, but aside from a Cinepak-encoded title screen, the game was not seen from again. It was thought that, had it been released, it would have served as an updated version of the original Ecco the Dolphin, or even an entirely new game altogether. While contemporary magazines attempted to debunk this notion[2], the rumor persisted for some time, with a 32X version of Ecco appearing in numerous lists of unreleased Sega games. However, series developer Ed Annunziata has since definitively confirmed that no Ecco game was ever in development for either the 32X or the Saturn.[1]
