The Excellent Dizzy Collection is a compilation containing three Dizzy games for the Sega Game Gear - Dizzy the Adventurer, Panic Dizzy and Go Dizzy Go!.
History
Development
The Excellent Dizzy Collection was born out of financial troubles following the failure of the Aladdin Deck Enhancer for the Nintendo Entertainment System. US-distributor of Codemasters products, Camerica was forced to close, and access to money and staff were limited. Initially developer Interactive Studios planned to re-release or port their Aladdin Deck Enhancer games to the Sega Master System; Dizzy the Adventurer, which had been packaged with all Aladdin adapters, and three work-in-progress games; Dreamworld Pogie, Go Dizzy Go! and Wonderland Dizzy.
Codemasters, however, had other ideas, and feeling that the games would be separate releases would be insubstantial on their own, caused Interactive Studios to bundle them together in one package. The non-Dizzy title Dreamworld Pogie was dropped (and has not been seen since) as was, inevitably, Wonderland Dizzy, after Codemasters decided they did not want two adventure games on the same cartridge. In its place, a port of an older Dizzy game, Dizzy Panic!, now re-titled Panic Dizzy.
As a result of this series of events, it took 22 years for Wonderland Dizzy to finally be released to the public.
Release
Ports were planned for a number of systems for release in January 1994 - for the aforementioned Sega Master System, the Sega Mega Drive and the IBM PC, however in the end only the Sega Game Gear version saw the light of day, and only in Europe. However, the Game Gear port is not optimised specifically for the system - it runs in the Master System's native resolution and does not tap into the extended colour palette.
