Ultracore is a Sega Mega Drive action game similar to Contra or Turrican, developed by Digital Illusions. It is an aftermarket release based on Hardcore, which was licensed for release by Sega back in the day but went unreleased by the original publisher, Psygnosis.

History

The Mega Drive version of Hardcore is known to have been "99% completed", but was cancelled when publisher Psygnosis cancelled all of its Mega Drive projects to shift its focus to the PlayStation. Digital Illusions (now known as DICE[1]) have been keen for many years to see this game released in some form, even entering discussions with Sony (who now owns Psygnosis) in 2010, which at first appeared to have gone nowhere.

The game was finally announced in August 2018 to be finished and released by German developer Strictly Limited Games, with originals release plans stated for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.[2] In a later announcement, the game was rebranded as Ultracore for legal reasons. The game was finally released first in March 2019 as a built-in game for the Mega Sg console.[3] Strictly Limited Games is currently aiming to release the game on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch and also announced a Sega Mega Drive cartridge release limited to 999 copies in June 22, 2019,[4] with preorders taking place in their website and being available in two separate batches during June 22 and June 23 which got sold out almost instantly. The game is scheduled to be shipped in August 2019.[5] Columbus Circle also secured rights for a Japanese release planned for release in September 2019.[6]
