Aworg: Hero in the Sky (アウォーグ, spelled Awogue in the opening tutorial[1]) is a Sega Mega Drive action platform game developed by Sega CS and published by Sega exclusively through Sega Game Toshokan in 1991.

Gameplay

The game is a side-scrolling action game where the player controls Aworg, a flying cyborg. In each round, Aworg must traverse an enclosed maze and collect three gate keys in order to open the warp gate, then locate and fly into the warp gate to end the round. Players must consider how to use Aworg's unusual abilities to safely bypass the robotic enemies and other hazards that populate each round.

Aworg does not move like a conventional platforming game character; instead, he carries two hand fans that he flaps like a bird. He can use the fans to propel him in different directions by holding B while moving the D-Pad in any direction. He continues to float in the direction of his flight until he runs into something or until the player flies him in another direction. Changing direction requires slowing his existing momentum before he starts moving in the new direction. As Aworg flies, he leaves behind a burst of air in the opposite direction (which is always the same length regardless of his momentum). This burst of air can be used to counteract the momentum of enemies, pushing stationary enemies out of the way or into hazards such as spikes while only slowing or stopping moving enemies.

Aworg can dart into any direction by pressing C while pressing a direction on the D-Pad (or he darts in the last pressed direction if no direction is held). This can be used to move out of the way more quickly or to charge at enemies as an attack (similar to Ecco the Dolphin). Some enemies are harmed by this charge attack (with most requiring multiple hits to destroy), while others are invulnerable to it and bounce Aworg off instead. Spiked balls harm Aworg if he charges into them. As with his flight, he leaves behind bursts of air when he charges, though in opposing 45-degree angles rather than directly behind him.

Aworg also has a direct attack called the "Rolling Aworg," performed by pressing A. This causes him to spin around and spray bursts of air around him in a spiral, destroying any enemies caught in it. However, this costs three health points each time it is used.

Aworg has a limited number of health points, which varies depending on the round (with more difficult rounds giving him more health). He loses different amounts of health from different hazards. The game awards 100 points for every health point remaining at the end of the round. Aworg loses a life if he loses all of his health points and must restart the round (though the player retains any previously found gate keys). The game ends if the player runs out of lives.
