The player can swap between robot and starship modes freely, though both come with their own set advantages and disadvantages. In robot mode, you are able to destroy ground targets and have greater freedom across the screen at the expense of being a bigger target for enemies. You can shoot rapidfire, but move slower. In starship mode you cannot destroy ground targets, but are less likely to be destroyed thanks to the smaller surface area of the ship. You can move faster, but cannot shoot rapidfire. {{1}} switches between the two forms and {{2}} shoots.

In robot mode, the Orguss has greater freedom of movement across the screen, allowing it to destroy ground targets. However, it is a bigger target for enemies and moves more slowly. Because of its slower movement, it is not possible to reach the end of the round before the time limit runs out solely in robot mode. In starship mode, the Orguss cannot move below the horizon and therefore cannot attack ground targets, but it moves more quickly and can dodge enemy fire more easily. The Orguss transforms into robot form (and cannot switch back to starship mode) at the end of the round to destroy the Space/Time Oscillation Bomb.

The Orguss is destroyed if it is hit by enemy fire or collides with an enemy, but it respawns in place if there are extra lives remaining. If time runs out, the player loses a life and the round starts over from the beginning. The game ends if the player runs out of lives. There is only one round, with three different segments, which repeats until the player loses or decides to stop playing.
