Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (マーヴル vs. カプコン クラッシュ オブ スーパーヒーローズ) is a 2D fighting game developed and published by Capcom. It is the third fighting crossover in the "vs." series, following X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.

In addition to characters from the Street Fighter series, Marvel vs. Capcom pulls characters from a variety of other Capcom franchises, such as Mega Man and Strider, and has them do battle with characters from the Marvel Comics universe.

This game was originally released for Capcom's CPS-2 arcade hardware in 1998, and it was ported to the Sega Dreamcast in 1999. It was originally set to be a launch title in North America[12] but saw a last minute delay.

Story

Marvel vs Capcom, Introduction.png

Introduction

The game is loosely based on the Onslaught arc from the X-Men comics. Onslaught is a sentient psionic entity created from the consciousness of Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto. During a battle between the X-Men and Magneto's Acolytes, Xavier used his telepathic powers to shut down Magneto's mind and render him catatonic. During the psionic contact, Magneto's anger, grief, and lust for vengeance entered Xavier's consciousness, mingling with Xavier's long-suppressed negative feelings, creating a being known as Onslaught. In the game, Xavier's conscience telepathically calls heroes from both the Marvel and Capcom universes to help stop him.

Onslaught

Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes is the third entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom series of 2D fighting games. The game utilizes similar tag team-based game mechanics to its predecessors. Each player selects two characters to compete in two-on-two battles. Instead of the typical best-of-three round format, matches consist of a single round. At the start of the match, the first selected character is controlled by the player, but the player is free to swap between the two characters at any point during the battle. Characters have separate vitality bars, and while one character fights, their teammate resting off-screen slowly regenerates the red portion of their vitality gauge. The first team to exhaust their opponent's vitality wins the match; however, if the timer runs out before either team is knocked out, the player with the most remaining health is declared the winner.

The game introduces two significant gameplay changes from Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. The Variable Assist feature, which allows the player to summon their off-screen teammate to perform a special attack, has been removed in favor of an assist character system. While similar in function, a third character is randomly chosen by each player prior to each match. These characters can be called upon in battle to perform a special attack and then leave. They can only be used a limited number of times per match (depending on the assist character). The game also introduces a new technique called the Variable Cross, where the player can attack the opponent with both characters simultaneously for a limited time.

Characters move with Left and Right and dash with Left Left and Right Right (or X+Y+L). They jump upward with Up and jump behind and ahead with Up-left and Up-right. Characters can Super Jump high into the air with Down Up (or A+B+R). They crouch with Down. Punches are done with X (light), Y (medium), and L (strong) and kicks are done with A (light), B (medium), and R (strong). Light attacks are faster and hard attacks deal more damage. Special moves for each character are done by pairing specific directional combinations with an attack button. Blocking is done by holding the D-Pad away from the opponent, which can also be done in the air. While blocking, characters can repel the attacker by pushing all three punch buttons simultaneously. Characters can perform a taunt with HOLD X START , which is a short animation during which the character is vulnerable to attack.

Throws and grabs are done by holding Left or Right when next to an opponent and pressing a medium or hard punch or kick button. Characters can perform throws in the air as well. Throws cannot be blocked, but characters can land safely out of a throw by pressing the same motion as a throw, which greatly reduces the damage taken. It is also possible to roll on the ground after falling from a throw or other attack by pressing Down Down-left Left P (or Down Down-right Right P if facing left).

Characters can initiate an Aerial Rave by pressing the light punch and kick buttons simultaneously (A+X by default) when next to an opponent. This launches the opponent high into the air, and the character can pursue the opponent with Up and follow-up with a midair combo.

At any time during the match, the player can execute the Variable Attack by pressing the strong punch and strong kick buttons simultaneously (L+R by default). This causes the other character to jump into battle with an aerial attack, followed by a taunt (during which they are vulnerable to attack), replacing the current character. The player can also execute a Variable Assist by pressing the medium punch and medium kick buttons simultaneously (B+Y by default). This summons the assist character to appear and perform a unique attack, then leave. Assist characters can only be used a limited number of times per match, depending on the assist character.

Characters share a Hyper Combo gauge with three levels. When the gauge is at level 1 or higher, a character can perform a Hyper Combo with a special button combination (typically a directional motion with two punch or kick buttons). These moves do high damage if they successfully connect with an opponent (and often do additional damage if the player presses the attack buttons rapidly while they are being performed). This costs one level of the gauge. Players can perform a special counterattacking technique called a Variable Counter after blocking an opponent's attack with Left Down-left Down P (or Right Down-right Down P if facing left), which summons the other team member to jump in and attack the opponent. This switches the characters and costs one level of the gauge.

When the gauge is at level 2 or higher and neither team member has been defeated, the player can perform a Variable Combination, where both characters perform a Hyper Combo simultaneously, by pressing Down Down-right Right (or Down Down-left Left if facing left), then the strong punch and strong kick buttons simultaneously (L+R by default). This switches the characters and costs two levels of the gauge. The player can initiate the Variable Cross, where both characters are active and controllable at the same time, by pressing Down Down-left Left (or Down Down-right Right if facing left), then the strong punch and strong kick buttons simultaneously (L+R by default). While this is active, the player is given unlimited use of the Hyper Combo gauge, allowing the player to perform several Hyper Combo techniques in quick succession. However, this requires at least two levels of gauge and drains the entire gauge when used. It lasts 7 seconds with two levels and 10 seconds with three levels.

After selecting a character, the player can choose between Normal or Easy mode and Normal or Turbo game speed. Easy mode automatically performs combos with repeated presses of light attack buttons and special moves with repeated presses of medium and hard attack buttons.

Modes

The game has multiple modes:

  • Arcade Mode: A single-player mode where the player faces seven other teams before battling Onslaught in a two-part battle. A second player can challenge the first by pressing  START , with the victor of the match continuing the game. There are eight difficulty levels for computer-controlled opponents.
  • Versus Mode: A two-player mode where players can choose their characters and battle each other in best of three matches, with the ability to set a handicap for each player and choose any stage.
  • Training Mode: A practice mode where the player can choose two characters to play and two characters to fight against. The player can set the AI difficulty to zero for dummy opponents and also toggle unlimited vitality, time, assists, and Hyper Combo gauge.
  • Survival Mode: A single-player mode where the player fights as many opponents as possible on a single vitality bar. Some vitality is restored between battles.
  • Cross Fever Mode: A four-player mode where players can simultaneously compete in a two-on-two match.

Characters

Move lists assume the player is facing right. If facing left, Left and Right should be reversed. P refers to any of the punch buttons, while K refers to any of the kick buttons.

Marvel

Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Wolverine all return from Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Gambit returns from X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

Venom and War Machine are new to the series, though War Machine is largely the same as Iron Man from Marvel Super Heroes.

Capcom

Three Street Fighter characters (Chun-Li, Ryu, and Zangief) return from Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Because of the reduced roster of Street Fighter characters, the three "shoto" fighters have been combined into a unique version of Ryu that can transform into a Ken form or Akuma form and adopt their movesets.

Morrigan uses her sprite and moveset from Vampire Savior (with some new Hyper Combos). Captain Commando, Mega Man, Strider Hiryuu, and Jin are new to the series and have original sprites and movesets. Though Jin previously appeared in the fighting game Cyberbots, he appears here in a new form, fighting outside of his mecha.

History

Legacy

The game was followed by Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, released for the Sega NAOMI arcade hardware in 2000 and then ported to the Sega Dreamcast later the same year.

Versions

The game was also ported to the Sony PlayStation, though the console's RAM limitations necessitated the removal of the game's core tag team mechanic. This restricted matches to two-character fights, reducing the secondary character to an assist role. However, there is a Cross-Over Mode that allows tag team play by forcing the players to fight with identical teams.
