The Tengen version of Klax is a port of the 1990 arcade game to the Sega Mega Drive. This is the version that was released overseas - Namco produced an alternate Mega Drive version for Japan.

Gameplay
 +
The objective of Klax is to catch the tiles that roll end-over-end along the conveyor belt with the paddle, then stack them in the "bin" below to line up three of the same color vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Doing so will clear the tiles from the bin, which is called a "KLAX", and score points. Lining up four or five in a row counts as 2 KLAXs and 3 KLAXs respectively. Flashing tiles are known as "wild tiles" and count as any color.
 +
 +
The player moves the paddle with Left and Right, and after catching tiles with the paddle, they must place the topmost where they want in the bin by pressing A, B or C. To send the topmost tile back to the conveyor belt, the player can press Up. To speed up the descent of the tiles, the player can press Down. The paddle can carry up to five tiles at a time. Failing to catch a tile with the paddle will fill the drop meter, and the game ends if the drop meter fills up completely. The player has a limited number of credits to continue the game with - the game can still be continued when there are no credits left, however doing so will reset the player's score to zero.

Klax (クラックス) is a straightforward puzzle game developed by the Tengen who licensed it from the Atari Games Corporation. Most remember it because of its edgy catch phrase, "It is the Nineties and there is time for Klax."
+
Levels in Klax are represented by "waves". To complete a wave, the player must fulfill a specific criteria that varies with each wave. After fulfilling the criteria, the player is awarded bonus points based on how many tiles are left on the conveyor belt and paddle, and how many empty spaces there are in the bin. The possible objectives are as follows:
 +
*"You must get xx KLAXs." - The player must get the specified number of KLAXs to clear the wave.
 +
*"You must get xx horizontals." - The player must get only horizontal KLAXs to clear the wave. Other kinds of KLAXs can still be gotten for extra points..
 +
*"You must get xx diagonals." - The player must get only diagonal KLAXs to clear the wave. Other kinds of KLAXs can still be gotten for extra points.
 +
*"You must catch xx tiles." - The player must catch the specified number of tiles with their paddle to clear the wave.
 +
*"You must get xx points." - The player must score the specified number of points to clear the wave.

Basically, you have to clear the blocks while the fall which is called a Klax when you line up three of the same color vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The main difference from most puzzle games is that you can see more than one of them as they fall end over end down a slope. They must be caught by a platform controlled by the player, and then placed where the player wants by pressing A, B or C, and to speed up their descent the player presses down. The player can only let three fall without being caught before they lose. This is kept track of by the drop meter.
+
The player may also choose to start a new game from either the first, sixth or eleventh waves. Starting from a later wave starts the player off with extra points and increases the size of the drop meter, allowing the player to make more mistakes. Some waves have secret warps that will allow the player to skip several waves if they meet the conditions for activating them. There are a total of 100 waves in the game.

Oddly enough there is no music, only the sound effects of the blocks moving and falling.

To complete a wave you must get a certain amount of Klax's or meet a certain criteria.

Non-Sega versions

The Tengen version of Klax is a port of the 1990 arcade game to the Sega Mega Drive. This is the version that was released overseas - Namco produced an alternate Mega Drive version for Japan.

Gameplay

The objective of Klax is to catch the tiles that roll end-over-end along the conveyor belt with the paddle, then stack them in the "bin" below to line up three of the same color vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Doing so will clear the tiles from the bin, which is called a "KLAX", and score points. Lining up four or five in a row counts as 2 KLAXs and 3 KLAXs respectively. Flashing tiles are known as "wild tiles" and count as any color.

 • "You must get xx KLAXs." - The player must get the specified number of KLAXs to clear the wave.
 • "You must get xx horizontals." - The player must get only horizontal KLAXs to clear the wave. Other kinds of KLAXs can still be gotten for extra points..
 • "You must get xx diagonals." - The player must get only diagonal KLAXs to clear the wave. Other kinds of KLAXs can still be gotten for extra points.
 • "You must catch xx tiles." - The player must catch the specified number of tiles with their paddle to clear the wave.
 • "You must get xx points." - The player must score the specified number of points to clear the wave.
