Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Quest is a 1993 game by Software Creations, and published by Sunsoft for the Sega Mega Drive exclusively in the US. It ties into Disney's 1991 film Beauty and the Beast.

Unusually, Sunsoft simultaneously released two Beauty and the Beast games. This one was aimed at girls, whilst Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast was targeted at boys.

Story

Beauty and the Beast Belle's Quest, Cutscene.png

Cutscene

A prince was magically transformed into a monster and his servants into household objects as punishment for his arrogance. The eccentric inventor Maurice gets lost in the forest and seeks refuge in the Beast's castle, but the Beast imprisons him for trespassing. When Maurice's horse returns without him, his daughter Belle ventures out searching for him and finds him locked in the castle dungeon. The Beast agrees to free Maurice if she takes his place as prisoner. To break his curse, Beast must learn to love Belle and earn her love in return before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose or else the Beast will remain a monster forever.

Gameplay

The game is a platformer played as Belle. She can move with Left and Right, duck with A, and jump with B.

Belle's health is indicated by books in the top-left corner of the screen. She takes damage from harmful creatures including bats, rats, and (despite being a Disney princess) birds and from other hazards such as bear traps. She has no attack and must avoid enemies and hazards. If she loses all of her health, she loses a try. She also loses a try if she falls down a bottomless pit. The game ends if she loses all of her tries. Her health is retained from stage to stage.

The story is progressed in between stages through cutscenes.

The Forest Maze
Belle must find her way of the maze-like forest. The pumpkin farmer in the village provided a hint: "I was lost in the woods yesterday, I finally got out by traveling north every time I saw a yellow rose, east every time I saw a white rose, and northwest every time I saw a red rose." Each clearing has up to three paths going north. The leftmost is northwest, the middle is north, and the rightmost is east. Pressing Up while standing in front of one of these paths travels in that direction. Pressing Down while standing in front of the north path travels south. The left side of the screen is west and the right side of the screen is east.

The Castle: The Kitchen
Belle finds her way to the Beast's castle, where she takes her father's place as prisoner. She must dodge the dishes and utensils as they fly across the screen for points. She does not lose health from being hit in this segment and gains health back depending on how many objects she dodged.

She can also open drawers with C, which sometimes contain keys. She enters doors with Up (which uses a key if the door has a lock on it). Doorways on the other side of the hallway cast a shadow on the ground and can be entered by pressing Down.
